Malachite stone is a mineral that is based on copper carbonate. It’s first use was as an ore of copper and was mined purely as a source of the metal. The green colour comes from the copper oxidising in the air because the mineral forms close to the surface of the Earth.
It is generally found in caverns and caves where the mineral has formed into a stalactite or coated the surface of the ground. Occasionally, malachite stone is found in crystal form and is actually translucent in colour in this form. The more typical form of the mineral is opaque and needs to be buffed and polished into the stone that is commonly known.
